What we believe at First Baptist Hanford

Q. What do we believe?
A. Christians differ in their beliefs in many ways but quite generally agreement is found on some of the basic doctrines of the Christian faith indicated below.

God - There is but one God who exists in Three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things and is Himself eternal. God is a Spirit, all powerful, all knowing, and ever present. He is a God of love, truth, holiness, justice and righteousness.

Jesus Christ - He is called both the Son of God, and the Son of Man. He always existed, but came to earth in human form as a baby born without sin, lived a sinless life, died for our sins, paying the penalty for our sins. He was buried and arose from the dead the third day, triumph over death. He ascended into Heaven where He is seated at the right hand of the Father, making intercession for us.

Holy Spirit - He is not an influence but a person. He convicts men of sin, reveals truth to us, regenerates us, empowers us, and guides us. He indwells every believer. He can be either obeyed, grieved or quenched. He wants to control us if we will let him.

Bible - The Bible is God's Word to men written by men under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It tells us of how God has revealed Himself to men through history, particularly in the person of Jesus Christ. It is our guide for our beliefs and our way of life.

No original manuscripts of the Bible are in existence. Most of us are capable only of reading English translations made from copies. Many good translations have been made of the Bible and there is no real difference in basic doctrines to be derived from the various translations. Many excellent modern translations of the Bible are available and are most helpful.

Salvation - Man is saved by God's grace alone through faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Man's works do not save him but should come as a result of his salvation. We are saved from sin's penalty. We are being saved from sin's power. Eventually, we will be saved from sin's presence.

Death - Death is separation of the physical and spiritual nature of man, as well as separation from friends and loved ones. In death the body is buried and the spirit of the Christian goes on to be with God.

Resurrection - In the resurrection our bodies will be raised from the grave and changed into a body like Christ's and then reunited with our spirits.

Return of Jesus Christ - Jesus promised that He would return in visible form to receive His saints to take them to be with Him forever. No man knows the day nor the hour of His return.

Judgment - The Bible clearly teaches that there will be a Day of Judgment when men will account for their lives to God. There will be a different type of judgment for believers and non-believers.

Heaven - It is a place of indescribable happiness prepared for believers in Christ. Here God's people will be eternally in Fellowship with Him and with one another.

Hell - It is described as a place of eternal punishment for those who reject Christ. It is a place where men will be forever separated from God.
